This course is presented by instructors with frontline military and civil experience in search-and-rescue (SAR) air operator certificate (AOC) management, SAR operations, aviation regulations, and international aeronautical and maritime SAR (IAMSAR) requirements. It focuses on a SAR systems approach to managing state (country) SAR helicopter operations. The class covers state SAR regulations and international SAR conventions as well as SAR safety management systems, SAR oversight activities, and SAR AOC management.
Learning Objectives: By the conclusion of the course, participants will have learned:
- How to interpret and inform SAR helicopter management system requirements in accordance with applicable regulations and legislation
- What constitutes SAR system components, including tasking, SAR SMS, oversight, training, and compliance
- How to inform state (country) SAR contracting agencies of the operator responsibilities when subcontracting helicopter SAR activities.

David Swan, director of operations and oversight at Search and Rescue International, has 13 years of experience as a helicopter pilot with the Irish Air Corps and 24 years of experience in the civil helicopter industry in Ireland, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Kosovo.
Brian Brophy, director of training and consultancy at Search and Rescue International, has more than 30 years of military and civil/commercial experience in the aviation industry. He has flown airplanes and helicopters during his 20-year career as a pilot, specializing in SAR operations.
Rowan Greenwood, director of standards and regulation at Search and Rescue International, has more than three decades of experience in commercial helicopter operations as a pilot, instructor, examiner, inspector, manager, flight safety officer, and UK Civil Aviation Authority regulator. He specializes in civil SAR.
