This course is an introduction to vertical reference and external load. We will discuss vertical reference as the important first step, followed by basic through advanced external-load operations and safety training. The course will include case studies and human factors training as well as FAA Part 133 regulations, basic longline rigging, and ground-crew training.

Learning Objectives: By the conclusion of the course, participants will have learned:

  • The history of vertical reference and longlining
  • The importance of vertical reference as the first step
  • Longline terminology and verbiage
  • Walk-arounds, basic call-outs, and safety procedures
  • The importance of ground-crew training and the perspective from the ground.

Instructor Bio

Andre Hutchings is the director of operations and chief pilot for Volo Mission and command pilot and director of government support operations for Columbia Helicopters. Andre has worked in the helicopter industry for more than 25 years in a variety of capacities, including firefighting, law enforcement, construction, logging, and oil and gas. He developed his passion for vertical reference and longlining while working for Columbia Helicopters (CHI), where he was pivotal in establishing CHI as one of the top private contractors in Afghanistan.
