This session presents an opportunity to learn why the US Helicopter Safety Team (USHST) is passionate about increasing simulation to improve both aeronautical decision-making (ADM) and the culture of safety in our industry. We’ll explain the USHST approach to helicopter safety enhancements and examine the benefits of experience and learning from mistakes.

Nick Mayhew is the cochair of the USHST, which is part of the Vertical Aviation Safety Team, and general manager of the L3Harris Arlington Training Center. A veteran of both Gulf Wars, he served for 28 years in the United Kingdom’s Royal Navy, mainly as a Sea King antisubmarine and search-and-rescue instructor pilot. Nick is qualified as a pilot in the Bell 206 and Sikorsky 300CBi; is experienced as a European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) flight examiner, holding both EASA and FAA commercial and instructor rotorcraft qualifications; and was the 2017 HAI W.A. “Dub” Blessing Flight Instructor of the Year.
