HAI Working Groups

HAI’s many working groups address rotorcraft industry issues affecting a range of sectors, from aerial firefighting to tour operations to uncrewed aircraft systems and more.

Joining a working group that interests you is a way to become a leader in the vertical flight industry. Plan to attend a meeting or two among those listed below. All HAI HELI-EXPO 2022 attendees are welcome, and new members are encouraged to attend.

Aerial Firefighting and Natural Resources Working Group Meeting

Thursday, March 10, 2022 | 8:00 am – 9:30 am

The HAI Aerial Firefighting and Natural Resources Working Group addresses issues that impact global helicopter aerial firefighting and natural resources operations. The group focuses on identifying and evaluating safety, operational, and support issues to shape policies and industry best practices. Attend the HAI Aerial Firefighting and Natural Resources Working Group meeting to join key stakeholders and leaders in the aerial firefighting industry and engage in discussions on current operational issues and initiatives. The meeting is open to all HAI HELI-EXPO 2022 attendees. New members are encouraged.

Air Medical Services Working Group Meeting

The HAI Air Medical Services Working Group is made up of member operators who are passionate about the air medical industry. The working group brings real-time issues to the surface to create solutions to common operator challenges. The working group invites active HAI members to join in the discussion.

Flight Operations Working Group Meeting

Wednesday, March 9, 2022 | 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm

The HAI Flight Operations Working Group participates in initiatives to improve flight regulations, flight procedures, helicopter routes, charts, infrastructure, and aeronautical publications and guidance materials. The Flight Operations Working Group partners with both industry and civil aviation authorities to integrate the vertical flight community into the current and future airspace system.

Attend the HAI Flight Operations Working Group meeting to discuss current operational issues and initiatives with other operational stakeholders responsible for managing, conducting, and supporting flight operations activities. This meeting is open to all HAI HELI-EXPO 2022 attendees, and HAI members interested in joining the working group are encouraged to attend.

Fly Neighborly / Environmental Working Group Meeting

Wednesday, March 9, 2022 | 1:30 pm – 3:30 pm

The HAI Fly Neighborly / Environmental Working Group educates international and US helicopter associations and operators in proven methods and best practices to minimize the noise generated by their operations. The group also raises awareness of the critical nature of these missions.

The working group coordinates national and regional Fly Neighborly industry outreach events, develops noise management resources that are available through the FAA and HAI websites, and produces Fly Neighborly instructional training videos and pilot courses. The group also works to raise public awareness of the industry’s voluntary Fly Neighborly noise abatement activities.

This meeting is open to all HAI HELI-EXPO 2022 attendees, and any HAI member interested in joining the working group is welcome to attend.

Helicopter Tour Operators Working Group Meeting

The HAI Helicopter Tour Operators Working Group strives to build a robust safety-centric environment that promotes collaboration with governments and local municipalities to strengthen the relationship between tour businesses and citizens. At this meeting, reports from around the world will be heard and discussed. Ideas and experiences from working group members as well as other attendees at this annual Expo gathering often lead to initiatives on enhanced safety procedures.

Restricted and Experimental Category Aircraft Working Group Meeting

Wednesday, March 9, 2022 | 9:00 am – 11:00 am

The HAI Restricted and Experimental Category Aircraft Working Group tackles issues related to the operation, maintenance, and integration of restricted- and experimental-category aircraft. The group strives to assist in the development of policies and best practices to enhance and promote the safe, efficient use of these aircraft and to break down regulatory barriers.

During this meeting, the group will address several pressing industry issues current to restricted- and experimental-category rotorcraft, including safety, regulatory, and support topics. This meeting is open to all HAI HELI-EXPO 2022 attendees. The group encourages new members.

Safety Working Group Meeting

Wednesday, March 9, 2022 | 8:00 am – 9:00 am

The HAI Safety Working Group plays a vital role in promoting safety throughout our industry. The group is featured in a series of year-round safety messages as part of HAI’s Spotlight on Safety campaign. We welcome visitors to the HAI HELI-EXPO® Rotor Safety Zone, where details are provided about HAI’s numerous safety programs. The group also sponsors multiple HAI HELI-EXPO training events, including the Safety Symposium, Safety Directors Forum, Safety Town Hall, and other Rotor Safety Challenge sessions.

The Safety Working Group Meeting is open to all HAI HELI-EXPO 2022 attendees, and new members are encouraged to attend. Come watch how the group operates, and consider offering your fresh ideas to help enhance safety in the vertical flight industry.

Technical and Maintenance Working Group Meeting

Monday, March 7, 2022 | 10:00 am – 12:00 pm

Join members of the HAI Technical and Maintenance Working Group for a briefing on the group’s activities in support of the technical and maintenance areas of the rotorcraft industry. The session will include the group’s input on regulatory review and workforce development.

Training Working Group Meeting

Tuesday, March 8, 2022 | 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm

At this meeting, members of HAI’s Training Working Group will discuss training challenges facing the industry. In light of recent mishaps involving VFR flights into IMC (instrument meteorological conditions), the working group will explore ways to help reduce this trend. Other topics will include alleviating the industry workforce shortage and finding ways to make training more efficient. This meeting is open to all HAI HELI-EXPO 2022 attendees. Stakeholders in aviation training, particularly in maintenance, are encouraged to attend and should also consider joining the working group.

Training Working Group Town Hall Meeting

Tuesday, March 8, 2022 | 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm

Members of the Training Working Group will present and discuss new courses and recommend industry best practices for IIMC (inadvertent entry into instrument meteorological conditions) at this town hall meeting. The working group will talk about the process that went into the development of VFR Best Practices as well as plans for an IIMC course.

Unmanned Aircraft Systems Working Group Meeting

Wednesday, March 9, 2022 | 1:30 pm – 3:30 pm

The HAI Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Working Group helps its members play a key role in the development of programs, policies, and guidance that facilitate the safe integration of uncrewed aircraft into the US National Airspace System. Working closely with government agencies, the working group identifies the optimal standards and recommended practices that enhance the safety and efficiency of crewed and uncrewed operations alike.

The UAS Working Group also assists HAI operators, manufacturers, and maintainers in their efforts to integrate uncrewed systems into their operations while promoting proactive, cooperative communication between all sectors of crewed and uncrewed aviation in shared airspace.

The meeting is open to all HAI HELI-EXPO 2022 attendees; new members are encouraged to attend. Come watch how the UAS Working Group operates, and consider offering your fresh ideas to help enhance safety in the constantly evolving UAS industry.

Utilities, Patrol, and Construction Working Group Meeting

The HAI Utilities, Patrol, and Construction (UPAC) Working Group is a recognized leader in the helicopter industry addressing issues impacting aerial patrol, construction, and maintenance missions. The HAI UPAC Working Group is a close partner with a wide range of federal and state agencies and works continuously to identify best practices that improve safety and operational efficiency. The HAI UPAC Safety Guide for Helicopter Operators, a highly regarded document in the UPAC industry that is referenced by the FAA, is a product of this working group.

During this meeting, the UPAC Working Group will provide an update on its recent activities and will address other topics of interest to UPAC operators. This meeting is open to all HAI HELI-EXPO 2022 attendees. The working group encourages new members.
